Over the Counter Drugs – Over the counter drugs are a tricky topic when it comes to health care coverage. For the most part, medications sold over the counter are not covered by insurance. There was a time–as recently as a few years ago–that FSA and HSA cards could be used to purchase OTC items using pretax dollars to limit health expenses. While tax-sheltered spending accounts can still be used for these items, the rules have changed slightly. Part of the Affordable Care Act dictates that any over the counter item purchased with a tax-free account must still be accompanied by a prescription and it must be filed and filled at a pharmacy. (In other words, you can’t just take something off the shelf and buy it a register expecting an HSA to cover it–they won’t.)
