Wellness & Prevention – It’s no secret that offering a quality health and wellness program can boost productivity in the workplace. Taking an active role in the health of your employees is one of the best ways to maximize the impact of your health insurance and benefit costs. Simple measures like health screenings, wellness plans and general health incentives can be a real boon to the health and morale of employees. It not only sends a message that the company values and cares about their workers, but also creates a culture of healthy lifestyle choices that stretch well beyond the office and workplace productivity.
Take a look at this resource from the Centers for Disease Control to learn how promoting a healthy workplace can be a benefit to the entire business.
Over the Counter Drugs – Over the counter drugs are a tricky topic when it comes to health care coverage. For the most part, medications sold over the counter are not covered by insurance. There was a time–as recently as a few years ago–that FSA and HSA cards could be used to purchase OTC items using pretax dollars to limit health expenses. While tax-sheltered spending accounts can still be used for these items, the rules have changed slightly. Part of the Affordable Care Act dictates that any over the counter item purchased with a tax-free account must still be accompanied by a prescription and it must be filed and filled at a pharmacy. (In other words, you can’t just take something off the shelf and buy it a register expecting an HSA to cover it–they won’t.)
The IRS section on the Affordable Care Act has more information about using tax-free accounts to buy over the counter medications.
